How do I remove incorrect information from my credit report?

Your credit report can certainly have incorrect information on it. In fact, mine had me with credit in two different names. A sales clerk typed my name wrong on a charge. Data entry personnel at the credit reporting companies also make mistakes. Your creditors may report incorrect information to those companies.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act makes both the consumer reporting company and the information provider responsible for correcting inaccurate or incomplete information in your report.

First, of course, you need a copy of your credit reports. You will make a photocopy of the page containing the incorrect information, circle it, and attach it to the letter you send to the reporting agency.

The credit reporting company must investigate your claim and report back to you in writing.
