I've been divorced for several years and am using my maiden name now. What can I do to stop credit card offers I receive in the mail in my married name?
There are three options available to you: phone, mail or online. The phone and online methods will remove your name for five years. You must write a letter and use the mail system for the removal to be permanent.
http://www.optoutprescreen.com/ is the easiest way. You can provide your information online and participate in the five-year plan immediately. Then you can request that your opt-out be made permanent.
You would then download letters to be mailed to the major credit reporting companies.
But that won't completely remove your married name from all mailing lists. You also need to visit the Direct Marketing Association consumer website at http://www.dmachoice.org to opt out of mailings from all companies who use direct marketing lists. Your name will be removed for three years.
At dmachoice, you may opt out online by providing credit card information for verification purposes. There will be no charge to your card. Or, you may send a letter with a $1.00 processing fee. The letter may not be processed for 60 days.
That still may not stop all the mail you receive because charities, political organizations and companies you have a relationship with are not covered by the law. You can then write to each of them directly to have your name removed.
